Hypnos Celebrates Organic And Explains Why We All Need To ‘Listen To Nature’

As part of ‘Organic September’, we were asked by the Soil Association to explain why Hypnos has invested in developing a certified Organic collection and what else we are doing to respond to the climate emergency.

Group Sustainable Development Director, Richard Naylor breaks down the Organic Collection below.

Organic Brand

At Hypnos, We wanted to produce the very best organic mattresses in the world whilst also highlighting the need for businesses to embrace and protect the Earth’s natural capital. A really good bed provides a great night’s sleep which is great for our physical and mental health. By combining 100% chemical-free GOTs-certified natural materials we not only created a product that is great for the health and well-being for those sleeping in the bed, it is also great for the health and wellbeing of the planet and all those employed in the supply chains.

According to the World Economic Forum, it’s estimated that over half of global GDP is moderately or highly dependent on nature — with £37 trillion potentially threatened by nature loss. This is an issue that affects all industries and not just the bed industry. If we look closely at how all nature is intrinsically linked and the enormous impact that biodiversity loss can have on the natural world – it could be a catastrophic domino effect – imagine a world without bees for example!

Nature loss is an issue that affects all businesses in some way, either directly or through the supply chain. If we want these natural resources to be available in the next 50 years, businesses need to think about their role in protecting them and their ecosystems.

Our luxurious Origins Organic collection has been created to be the UK’s most nature-friendly mattress collection as well as being supremely comfortable of course!’

Farming & Nature

‘At Hypnos we believe sleep shouldn't cost the Earth. We listen to nature all the time; we see the impact climate change is having on the natural world and place sustainability at the heart of all our decision-making to help improve responsible innovation and influence the natural world around us. Indeed we plan to go beyond neutralising our footprint to actively helping to regenerate the planet.

As an MSc Sustainability student, I have gained a much broader understanding of biodiversity loss and the impact that it has on the natural world.

We understand that we cannot over-exploit the Earth’s natural capital and that we can happily design and ethically handcraft beautiful mattresses that work harmoniously with nature. As a commitment to our environment, we plan to set nature-based targets for the Hypnos brand to demonstrate our commitment to helping to protect and regenerate the natural world.

We hope by doing this we can influence other industries as well as our own industry that the use of natural and organic materials, and nature-based solutions, will play an immense part in the planet’s road to recovery.'

Ambition

‘We currently have several innovation workstreams connected to the environmental, social and economic elements of sustainability. Our short, medium and long-term focus is on carbon reduction as it should be for all business, with our product development focusing on circular designs, and responsibly sourcing natural materials, traceable to their origin, that together help to protect and restore nature, helping to create a more sustainable future for generations to come.

We are working with new plant-based and animal fibres, as well as certification bodies, that help reduce the carbon footprint of our farming communities and within our wider supply chain whilst also looking inwardly at our own manufacturing environment and processes with a view to continual reduction programs.

We are inspired by nature and love using natural materials for the reasons outlined earlier, but we also like recycled materials. Recycled materials are important from a carbon perspective and a balance needs to be struck to ensure that the use of, say, recycled polyester does not encourage more production of virgin plastic fibres. Currently, according to the American Chemistry Council, some 756 million tons of virgin plastic will still be produced in 2050 compared to 308 million tons produced in 2018!

Hypnos is committed to being net zero by 2030. Our approach will continue to be to make a positive environmental and social impact, investing in responsible innovation, nature-based circular designs and initiatives to combat climate change.’
