Wool Elevated: Hypnos X Amber Thompson at the NBF Bed Show

A Familiar Material in a New Light
What happens when you take a material we know for comfort and ask people to look at it as art?
At the NBF Bed Show, the UK's biggest bed trade exhibition, designer Amber Thompson did just that with Floc. Her suspended light sculpture gave wool a new presence: illuminated, richly textured and compelling to view from every angle.
As visitors to the Hypnos stand looked up to find an unexpected use for the familiar material suspended overhead, they asked, “Is that wool?” capturing the sense of curiosity at the heart of the installation,
inspired by Amber’s fascination with the possibilities we might miss when we think we already know a material.
“We are so familiar with wool that I think we sometimes overlook how amazing it is“ says Amber. “I wanted to experiment with what happens when you strip away that expectation and allow wool to become something else entirely.“
Amber Thompson & What Floc Means to Her
Amber is a designer and material researcher. Her project, Floc, creates sculptural lights from British sheep’s wool. In each piece, the fibres, volume and irregular contours give the light its shape and character.
“Rather than hiding the material within a conventional product, the wool becomes the product itself.”
Seen from below, the forms appeared almost weightless. Up close, individual fibres and natural variations came into view. Light passing through the wool revealed details that are easy to miss when the material is used in more familiar ways.
Seeing its Value
As Amber researched wool, she became interested in the people and places behind it. She was struck by the contrast between its beauty and versatility and the modest return farmers can receive for a fleece.
“That contrast stayed with me: how can something so naturally abundant, versatile and beautiful be so undervalued?”
For Amber, a fleece’s journey gives the finished object another layer of meaning. Wool begins on a sheep in the British landscape; she wants people to be able to understand that connection when they encounter something made from it.
A
Reason to Look Again
At Hypnos, natural materials and skilled making are central to our approach. Amber’s installation offered a new way to celebrate wool, inviting NBF Bed Show visitors to stop, look up and see its character for themselves.
“For me, that is where design becomes exciting: taking something familiar, overlooked or undervalued, and giving people a reason to see it differently.”
Through Floc, Amber did exactly that. She transformed a material associated with comfort into a work that sparked curiosity, while keeping the beauty of the wool itself in plain sight.
