From seeing wool differently to understanding it
At the NBF Bed Show, Amber Thompson’s illuminated wool sculptures invited visitors to look up and see a familiar material differently. Suspended above the Hypnos stand, her Floc lights revealed wool’s texture, volume and natural character through light.

DISCOVERING THE CHARACTER OF WOOL
Wool can seem like one familiar material, yet each fleece has its own characteristics. Fibre length, fineness, strength and natural crimp all help determine how it can be used. Even fleeces from sheep of the same breed can vary.

A fibre selected for one application may have different qualities from one chosen for another. The Woolkeepers’ work with Solidwool, for example, uses hardy Welsh mountain wool to create a distinctive composite material, demonstrating the possibilities of wool that has traditionally been undervalued.
That understanding is central to appreciating wool as a luxury fibre. Its value comes through thoughtful selection and skilled making, allowing its particular qualities to become part of the finished product.
