This year, Marie Kondo started a trend of decluttering. The KonMari Method™ encourages tidying by category – not by location – beginning with clothes, then moving on to books, papers, miscellaneous items, and, finally, sentimental items. “Keep only those things that speak to the heart, and discard items that no longer spark joy. Thank them for their service – then let them go.” And, at Hypnos, we also believe having a clear out of your living space can make you more focused, relaxed and productive, especially when focusing on the bedroom.

When it comes to your sleep sanctuary, a tidy space not only breeds a tidy mind, it also creates a calm haven and a room that’s easier for you to relax and sleep in. In fact, de-cluttering is the perfect way to de-stress and create a bedroom that’s free from disorder and perfect for sleep.

So what better time to start to re-organise your home in a bid to keep a calm mind.

Here, Hypnos’ interior designer, Samantha Parrish, offers her helpful tips and advice on how to turn your bedroom into an oasis of calm:

Having a good clear out and getting rid of unwanted clutter can do wonders for how you feel, but be careful not to be too ruthless. Be kind to yourself and your possessions and make sure you keep anything of sentimental value as memories are precious.

“The bedroom in particular is an extension, and sometimes a reflection, of how you’re feeling, for example if you’re under pressure, feeling stressed or anxious, then your bedroom might be very messy. Or if you’re feeling happy, it may be on the other end of the spectrum and extremely tidy. Therefore choosing to start your spring clean in the bedroom can have a dramatic impact on how you’re feeling and give you a boost of happiness!

Space saving solutions

“Practical storage solutions which offer clever use of space are the perfect choice to keep belongings tidy, and as the bed is the biggest piece of furniture in the room, opt for a bed with in-built storage which will allow you to use this space wisely. There are so many storage options that there really is an option for every kind of bedroom space, no matter if that’s big or small. Here’s my top storage solutions, so you can choose which is right for you.

2) Hideaway™

For those who want to make full use of the under bed space and have easy access to items, the unique Hideaway divan base is the perfect solution. The base is slightly deeper than a standard divan and offers a large open cavity, perfect for storing away full size suitcases or boxes. It’s also ideal for storing longer items (up to 180cm on a Super King) that run the full width of the bed as the whole area is open. The aperture is covered with a fabric valance.

Best for: complete use of space; storing seasonal heavy, large or tall items at the back, frequent access at the front; bedrooms where a drawer could get in the way.
