Langdale Chase - Historic Charm on the Shores of Lake Windermere

Langdale-Pikes-Suite-(27)-(1).jpg

Standing on the shores of Lake Windermere, Langdale Chase Hotel offers a rare blend of historic charm, peaceful lakeside views, and thoughtful luxury. This iconic property dates back to 1890 and has been carefully restored by Thwaites, with craftsmanship and stewardship at the heart of every design decision.

Set within 4.5 acres of gardens Langdale-Chase-Hotel---Copy-(1).jpgoriginally designed by landscape architect Thomas Hayton Mawson, Langdale Chase is known for its unique character and stunning views. The hotel brings together Victorian elegance and modern comforts, all while honouring the natural beauty that surrounds it. Owned by Thwaites, a family-run hospitality company that operates a collection of hotels, inns and pubs across England, this lakeside sanctuary is rooted in laidback luxury, craftsmanship and character.

A key part of the refurbishment was the creation of a sleep experience that embodies these values. For this, Langdale Chase chose Hypnos, selecting the Woolsleeper mattress from its Signature Collection. Each mattress is expertly handcrafted in the UK using wool which can be traced right back to the farm and now certified by the Responsible Wool Standard (RWS).

“We wanted our guests to feel completely at ease, wrapped in calm and comfort. Choosing Hypnos was a natural choice because their values around sustainability and craftsmanship mirror everything we stand for at Langdale Chase,”  Mike Vincent, General Manager

This collaboration brings together two family-run British businesses who share a passion for quality and care. Hypnos, now in its fifth generation, is known for its approach to ethical sourcing and sustainable design and creating comfort without compromise. With a shared eye for detail and a love of heritage, Hypnos was a perfect partner for Langdale Chase.

“Working with Thwaites and the team at Langdale Chase on this restoration has been a real pleasure. We’re aligned in our dedication to British heritage, quality, and creating memorable experiences through thoughtful design. Our Signature Collection mattresses bring all of this together, offering luxurious comfort that’s responsibly made to last.” David Baldry, Hypnos Group Managing Director

The hotel’s 30 individually designed bedrooms celebrate Windermere-Panoramic-(15)-(1).jpgoriginal period features while offering modern luxuries, including minibars and locally made Cumbrian toiletries from Bath House. For something even more private, guests can book the standalone Boathouse Suite, complete with a rooftop terrace and wraparound balcony.

Originally designed by Mawson and now reimagined by garden designer Annie Guilfoyle, guests are able to explore the hotel’s direct lakeside gardens and surrounding landscape. Whether relaxing on the west- facing terrace or taking to the water aboard Albatros, a beautifully restored 1928 wooden motor boat offering a timeless way to experience Windermere, every moment invites pause and relax.

Afternoons are made extra special with Swallows and Amazons inspired afternoon teas, a playful nod to lakeside adventures and childhood memories, served alongside breathtaking views.

From luxurious beds to lakeside experiences, Langdale Chase invites guests to slow down and reconnect with nature in a lakeside setting The Times has likened to ‘Lake Como vibes in the Lake District’.
