The Collaboration
Hypnos has collaborated with Emma J Shipley to bring the wonder of her playful, illustrative designs inspired by nature to the world of sustainably-made, natural comfort. Her beautiful Mythica fabric designs have been used by our finest craftsmen and women to demonstrate how a spectacular bed can be the living, beating heart of any sleep sanctuary.
A Hypnos mattress, divan and headboard make the perfect canvas for these intricate designs. Beautifully pattern-matched, plants and animals playfully skip from the divan to the mattress to reach the heady heights of this specially-made headboard.
The hand side-stitched mattress is unique and made with raspberry tape edging and bespoke pink wool tufts. Daring pink and gold legs complete this true work of art.
It was a great pleasure to work with such a talented British artist who creates enchanting designs that spark the imagination, allowing you to step into an imagined world that emboldens you to find your style. Featuring a gothic and mystical interpretation of natural landscapes, Emma takes inspiration from coral reefs, Costa Rican rainforest, African savannahs and more to provoke the senses.
The Emma J Shipley Brand
The brand launched at London Fashion Week in 2012, after Emma graduated from the Royal College of Art. Winning multiple awards for her drawing and designs on graduation, she has since won business awards in both the UK and internationally, including the WGSN Global Fashion Award for Emerging Brand. Her creations now feature across a range of home furnishings, accessories, luxury scarves and now beds, all adorned in Emma’s colourful and intricately drawn fantasy artworks. Her collections are stocked in some of the best department stores and boutiques around the world.
The Story & Craft Behind Emma J Shipley’s Mythica Designs
Her inspiration and passion for design began with 18th Century Botanical illustrations and a love for the Arts & Crafts movement in Britain. Blended with Emma’s own travels,a fervent imagination and influenced by myths, legends, and fairytales, Emma has created a unique and fantastical world of design. You’ll see her fascination with nature and animals from her travels, particularly those from the wild places on Earth, such as the jungles of Costa Rica and the savannahs of Africa.
These designs are all hand-drawn in pencil, before being intricately digitally coloured, giving a distinctive look combining traditional and cutting-edge techniques.
The Emma J Shipley concept bed is on display in our Princes Risborough showroom for the foreseeable future.
